  4. is The Alphabet  by David Diringer. He begins his story as follows 
  5. (p. 37):

  7.           The alphabet is the last, the most highly developed, 
  8.      the most convenient and the most easily adaptable 
  9.      system of writing. Alphabetic writing is now universally 
  10.      employed by civilized peoples; its use is acquired in 
  11.      childhood with ease. There is an enormous advantage, 
  12.      obviously, in the use of letters which represent single 
  13.      sounds rather than ideas or syllables; no sinologist knows 
  14.      all the 80,000 or so Chinese symbols, but it is also far 
  15.      from easy to master the 9,000 or so symbols actually
